A screed is a construction element that comes in various thicknesses. It's main job is to provide a solid, long-lasting surface for the installation of specific flooring and/or waterproofing products.
Screeds are made from sand and cement mortar, or anhydrite-based mortar.
Screeds can also be heated; this usually means a central heating system is installed and screeded over to provide a warm substrate all year round.
In New Zealand, screeds are mainly installed before the bathroom tiling begins for tiled showers to create the falls necessary for any water to go down the drain.
Floors in showers, commercial kitchens and other areas where there are significant amounts of water used must be laid to sufficient fall to ensure water will drain to a defined outlet(s).
Falls recommended for wet area floors are:
• 1:50 for a level entry shower bases with a central waste outlet. • 1:60 for a hob shower base with a central waste outlet. • 1:80 for a mono-pitch shower base with a channel drain waste outlet. • 1:40 for tiled decks that also act as a roof • 1:80 for commercial kitchen floors or similar
